Pattern review, giveaway and discount: Funky Mister Shorts by Puppy Dog Tails

I kinda love it when my friends make patterns – I love to support them and buy it straight away but most of all, I usually love their style and want to shout from the rooftops how awesome it is. No exceptions here.

Funky Mister Shorts by Puppy Dog Tails

Holly from Puppy Dogs Tails (and Or Elsie for the girls!) has been making these gorgeous shorts for years. She drafted the pattern herself as she wanted something that could offer a little more options than a standard shorts pattern does. Recently she decided to digitise it so we can all enjoy making them! Yay!

Usually you would choose cotton (and the pattern suggests cotton or denim) but I asked Holly if I could make them with knit. Mmmmm she said. Haven't done that! I knew Master almost 7 would prefer these so I thought I would give it a go. I did have to make a few adjustments to suit but nothing an experienced sewer couldn’t handle.

As the pattern only goes to size 5, I modified slightly by adding an inch to the bottom and two inches to the top. I ended up having to cut the top back by an inch which is why my back feature panel looks more like an elastic casing. As I have such a skinny boy, I think I would be fine to sew the size 5 pattern for him in future. The pattern is designed to have the bottom cuff to fold up initially and then down as they grow taller. As I didn’t do this with the knit, I could have gotten away with just making the 5.

You can see my shorter casing here
Master almost 7 (in just over a week!) designed these himself. He was very, very specific about what he wanted. Since I make so much for Miss 4, I was more than happy to accommodate his exacting requirements.

This pattern is great. I was able to put it together in just under 2 hours and I think now I know the process, it would be much quicker in future. The way the pockets are put together is just pure genius and I will absolutely be applying that method to other pockets in future. Don’t you just love it when you learn something new!

This is a fun pattern that allows you to play with your fabric choices – I’m planning to try some other variations too.

Random photo of him being camouflaged!

Will I make this again? - absolutely. My little guys loves them and they have been worn three times in the last week.

Will I make this to sell for Lil Pip? – I might as everyone is always asking for more funky boys clothes.

Pattern: Funky Mister Shorts by Puppy Dog Tails

Fabric: Skulls and Green Marle no long available (Navy here) both from Crafty Mamas Fabrics

Difficulty (1-10 scale with 1 being easy and 10 hard): I’m going to say with cotton it would be a 5 or 6 but as I challenged myself with the knit which added another level of skill it would be a 7 or 8!

Time: Less than 2 hours

Now if you want to race over and buy own own copy straight away, Holly is offering a discount for Lil Pip Design readers. Use the code FUNKYPIP for a 20% discount.

If you would like to win your own - you have two chances. I thought we could help Holly with some marketing - so tell me in 25 words or less how you would describe these shorts. A creative answer will win!

You are welcome to enter both (I know I would even though I can sew my own!) and you only need to comment to win. The other options are just kinda paying it forward - keep in touch with Puppy Dogs Tails and spread the word. You don't have to but it is nice to support others right?

  1. Great review Jane. These shorts are something stylish for the little men in our lives which is sooo hard to find. Great fabric combos but I think I'd have to go with the cars in Combo 1. I can see my little man running around in these saying Brrr, brrrr cause thats the sound his cars make for now :)
